As part of our stigma and discrimination reduction work, volunteers go house to house identifying people affected by HIV or TB who may need support reintegrating into school or community life. On one such visit, they found a 12-year-old boy, infected through mother-to-child transmission, whose parents had both since passed away. He's being raised by his 72-year-old grandmother.
He isn't a statistic we can close out. Continued support for his care and schooling is now one of our standing recommendations, and it's the kind of case that reminds our team why the door-to-door work matters as much as the durbars and the radio spots — some people are only ever found one household at a time.
